Champion Lakes Residential Park Precinct is located along the edge of the rowing Lake at Champion Lakes International Regatta Centre and is the central public open space area for the residential development.
The Park Precinct provides opportunities for the residents, general public and spectators to access the rowing Lake, watch rowing and other water-based events from steel and timber viewing platforms, and participate in informal games and active play in open lawn areas with barbecue facilities for passive recreation and gathering. The landscape design achieves a strong, bold and contemporary integrated Park Precinct that is informed by a local environmental aesthetic and consists of three main parks overlooking the Lake.
The strategic use of transplant trees, striking artworks by a local public artist that respond to the function of the site and rowing Lake, and controlled lighting to key features further enhance and add depth to the Precinct. Detention basins and a small informal ornamental lake have been incorporated into the design for the onsite treatment of stormwater. An environmental requirement of the project was the treatment of the urban stormwater on site, prior to entering the rowing Lake. A system of connected detention basins and a small ornamental lake for management and filtration of the stormwater was integrated into the park’s design, including a water cascade to filer and aerate the stormwater before it enters the Lake.
The design utilises simple, robust materials that have been chosen for their durability - maintaining their inherent qualities as the landscape matures - with minimal maintenance and that can be readily and economically replaced in the future if necessary. The planting palette comprises native and indigenous species that are suited to the location and environment, to minimise water use as well as provide ongoing educational value by demonstrating the use and beauty of indigenous and endemic plant species in an urban setting.
