The Cockburn Central Regional Centre is a Transit Orientated Development (TOD) containing a major public transport hub which includes local and regional bus routes and Perth’s Southern Suburbs Railway. Cockburn Central aims to be a demonstration of Ecological Sustainable Development (ESD) designed through the creative use of colour, materials including recycled products, high quality landscaping and detail design.
The landscape design for the Cockburn Central Town Square and public domain focused on developing a multi-functional, vibrant and active social hub to the heart of the development reflecting the sustainable principles of recycle and re-use, connectivity and linkages including pedestrian, vehicular and public transport. Flexible spaces have been created to encourage social interaction and accommodate community events. A large Fig Tree transplant provides shade and an iconic element around which the Town Square unfolds with flush kerbing to accommodate universal access, deciduous trees to ameliorate climatic conditions and plentiful seating of recycled timber / plastic composite material. A central play element provides a dynamic aspect to the Town Square while the iconic steel shelter provides protection from the elements.
The Public Artworks are intended to augment the practical function of the site by contributing to the visual appearance and appeal of the general landscape, complement the rich and engaging public realm and provide points of interest in the Regional Centre, particularly the Town Square. The Artworks by Malcolm McGregor focus on interpretation, information and community education and are designed to promote public environmental and ecological awareness, in particular principles of social sustainability including connectivity, linkages and balance.
