The landscape design philosophy for the new Library Complex at the Joondalup Campus of Edith Cowan University is based on integrating the new landscape works with established themes and materials existing on site.
The Level 1 courtyard was designed to create a strong landscape setting that complemented the new library building, while providing a functional and pleasant environment in which staff and students can work and recreate. A series of raised timber seating platforms, table facilities and other informal meeting spaces have been designed on different levels in response to the sunken nature of the space. These elements have been integrated into the architectural layout and form of the courtyard space with sunken spaces designed to incorporate feature shade trees and a variety of native and exotic plant species, all of which combine to form the unique character of this courtyard area. The array of levels create different outdoor rooms that have been designed to offer staff, students and visitors a variable protected external area that is seen as an extension of the internal library space.
The overall landscape has been designed so that a fully sustainable and holistic approach can be adopted for all aspects of the landscape works to ensure that the ongoing management and maintenance of the landscape can be easily achieved, and fully compatible with current Edith Cowan University grounds’ standards.
In addition, specific attention was given to understanding micro-climatic factors for plant species selection, in order to reduce watering, pruning and fertilising requirements. Water conservation techniques such as organic mulching to increase water retention in the soil and to reduce weed growth were also adopted.
Public Artworks by Ann Neil and Steve Tepper have been incorporated at the library forecourt to create a strong entry experience.
