Honeycomb Playground is within the first park developed in Brabham Estate in the northeastern corridor of Perth. Located near Whiteman Park, theming of the estate has been inspired by native bee species and their contribution to the well-being of humans.

This theme is strongly expressed in every aspect of the play space design, from the bespoke honeycomb play tower designed by PLAN E to furniture elements, public art (by Nic Compton) and signage.

The bee theme is further expressed through the idea of “bee active”, with a focus on providing a variety of trails for play, scooter, bike and walking to promote an active lifestyle. The bee play trail uses the idea of “follow the bee flight path” in and around the main honeycomb structure and amongst the play areas.

PLAN E has designed interpretive signage throughout the park providing information on the importance of bees to human and environmental health, including contribution to plant diversity, enhancing nutrient value of many fruits and vegetables and providing nutritional and medicinal benefits through the by-products of honey, pollen, beeswax and royal jelly.

Retention of existing mature eucalypts was a key objective for both ecological and amenity value and influenced the layout of the park to ensure successful integration into the new landscape.

The result is a dynamic, vibrant and engaging play space that is both fun and informative, with strong community appeal creating an important social and recreational hub within the estate.
